filmmaking, I'd want to be an independent musician. And yes, I made an album. Like a dream came true. In 2016, I completed my first electronic music track using sounds recorded in Hong Kong. The idea of creating a music album had been brewing even earlier. My initial concept wasn't even for an album like Villes. After finishing the first single, "Nathan Road," I realized I could create an album of this kind: combining electronic music with soundwalks I had consciously or subconsciously collected in various places. Busy with film work, this project was shelved for several years. However, I never stopped paying attention to all kinds of sounds wherever I went. All the real-world sound materials in the album come from collections gathered during my travels and daily life. I observed, thought, and searched for what sounds could depict the different cities in my mind. Over the subsequent years, I also completed a few more tracks but never released them. It was during this recent pandemic that I finally completed the remaining tracks under the album's framework. Together with my previous creations, there are ten tracks in total, representing seven cities: Paris, Chongqing, Hong Kong, Montpellier, New York, Marseille, and Seoul. These form the complete content of the album. The album Villes has no translated title. Villes is the plural of the French word Ville (city). From the spark of the idea to the completion of the first track, and now the entire album's existence, it took over four years of fragmented time, but it is finally done. This electronic music album about the sounds of cities has finally moved from concept to reality. The Palais du Cinéma was right next to the harbor. Every day after watching a film, I would go and sit by the port. That day was a Monday, and the air on the way to the harbor was noticeably more humid than in the previous days—closer to the sea, the road stretched into the fog. I arrived at the harbor, intending as usual to go watch a film, but seeing the fog over the sea, I decided to sit down by the port instead. The entire afternoon, ships sailed in and out of the fog. The people who came to the harbor—moving slowly, standing still, or sitting down—all seemed a little lost. The memories that came to mind were as indistinct as the fog covering all visibility; the sea right in front of me was no longer clear. This is not a collection of photographs, nor is it a book of essays. It is an afternoon, an afternoon one is destined to own and inevitably lose.
