project in progress
"It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality."
— Virginia Woolf
In 2019, following a year-long analog photography project, PHANTOM 鬼 emerged as one of these series.
Hallucinatory, supernatural, and rare. The phantom: a kind of absent presence. It is uncertainty and the undetectable; it is the shadow cast by the human heart into the void. Emptiness, unconsciousness, light, blur, shadow, destruction. The invisible being.
Different times and spaces overlap through uncontrollable coincidences; the confusion is like ghosts coming and going.
The series explores absence, an absent presence, a ghostly existence, a mental reality.
What I left behind is chasing me.
Only the Sea, this unfailing screen, is worth watching
2016
In July 2016, I attended a film festival in Marseille. The Palais du Cinéma was right next to the harbor. Every day after watching a film, I would go and sit by the port. That day was a Monday, and the air on the way to the harbor was noticeably more humid than in the previous days—closer to the sea, the road stretched into the fog. I arrived at the harbor, intending as usual to go watch a film, but seeing the fog over the sea, I decided to sit down by the port instead.
The entire afternoon, ships sailed in and out of the fog. The people who came to the harbor—moving slowly, standing still, or sitting down—all seemed a little lost. The memories that came to mind were as indistinct as the fog covering all visibility; the sea right in front of me was no longer clear.
This is not a collection of photographs, nor is it a book of essays.
It is an afternoon, an afternoon one is destined to own and inevitably lose.
I hope you, too, will see this afternoon.
